Let's Decorate

Today, I thought I would jump in with a brand new topic.  I've been reading some new blogs recently, and have enjoyed some posts about home decorating.  And, since I am dreaming about owning a new home ... I'm also dreaming about what that home might be like, and how I might like to decorate it.

When I got my house all whipped into shape for the realtor the other day, I thought I would go around the house and take a few pictures.

This got me to wondering ...

#1  What do the homes of my bloggy friends look like?  (We see glimpses into so many parts of each other's lives, but rarely do we see into each other's kitchens or living rooms.)

#2  What styles do my Bloggy Friends decorate in?  (It was so fun to see some of your homes on our Bloggy Friend Road Trip last fall ... we met 7 of your families on our 12 state tour.)

#3  What colors do my Bloggy Friends decorate with?  What do our colors say about us?

So ... I am going to give you a glimpse into my house, and I would LOVE to have some of you give a peak into your houses as well.  (Just write a post and link back to this post, to keep it fun.  Leave me a comment, telling about your post, so that all of my readers can hop over to peak into your house, too.)

First of all, though, I want to warn you ... I LOVE COLORS ... lots & lots of colors ...  Do you???  Are your walls white?  Do you use 1 color per room?  Do any of you have multiple colors in a room?  Just curious ...  I just realized that every room in our house, besides 2 of the bathrooms, have at least 2 colors on the walls.  Yes ... I LOVE colors!

Welcome to our Dining Room.

Right now we have the table rather small,
but this room does hold our expanded table,
which seats all 14 of us.

Colors:

The Dining Room has ...
1 Rose Beige wall
1 Light Purple wall

Welcome to Our Kitchen

We LOVE our large kitchen.
We took down the set of cupboards
that separated the kitchen from the dining room,
which hung over the long bar (which holds 6 bar stools).
(The cupboards got in the way of conversation:
the most important part of the large family kitchen.)

Colors:

The Kitchen has ...
1 Light Purple wall (extended from the Dining Room)
2 Light Mint Green Walls (under the cupboards)
2 Medium Mint Green Walls (above the cupboards)

My favorite little corner of my big kitchen.

Mama's Coffee Shop

Welcome to the Master Bedroom

We just re-decorated this room 2 years ago.
I LOVE the wainscoating that Papa put up.
I couldn't do the dark walls, if they weren't off-set
by the white wainscoating.
Papa & I LOVE the Americana / Patriotic Theme.

Colors:

The Master Bedroom has ...

1 Deep Red Wall

and ...

3 Deep Blue walls.

We got the Ikea furniture 2 years ago, also.

Welcome to the Master Bath

It's tiny, but bright and cozy.

Colors:

The Master Bath has ...

2 Deep Red walls
2 Bright White walls

Welcome to the Younger Girls' Room!

All of the kids' rooms have changed colors multiple times,
as we have rotated bedrooms depending on current kid' needs.
How many kids do we have living at home at any given time???

This room had 2 sets of bunkbeds before we
re-organized to put the house on the market.

Colors:

The Girls' Room has ...

2 Purple Walls
2 Light Green Walls

Welcome to the Teen Boys' Room!

This room had a loft bed over a loveseat,
in addition to the bunk bed,
before we re-organized for the sale of the house.
It was a cool Teen Boys' Room!

Colors:

These are the "official" Seattle Mariners colors.

The Teen Boys' Room has ...

2 Dark Blue walls
2 "Mariner Green" walls

(The Teen Girls' Room was dismantled
for the sale of the house.
It has 1 Teal wall and 3 White Walls.
They decorated with black & white bedding
and hot pink accent pillows.  Very nice!)

Welcome to the Family Room!

This room was what sold us on this house 8 years ago.
It is a WOW room for an extra-large family!!!

The Family Room is 20' x 28',
plus an attached 2nd kitchen.

Here is the 1st half of the Family Room.
This is our Scrapbooking & Game Playing Area.

Colors:

The Family Room has ...

3 Light Green walls

This is the 2nd half of our Family room.
This is our Hang-Out / Chit-Chat room
for kids, teenagers, and young adults.

Welcome to our 2nd Kitchen!

We don't actually use the extra stove
as often as we thought we would.
Mainly it is used for big holiday meals
and for Papa Murphy's Pizza nights.

Colors:

3 Light Yellow walls
with the
3 Light Green walls
from the Family Room

These extra cupboards hold all of our Kid Craft Supplies.

I hope you enjoyed the tour.

If you want to buy a house,
just let me know.  (smile)

I'll let you see the living room another day,
when I show you may favorite decorating item.

So, how about you ???

  1. How fun! I love being in other people's homes! I know we have some pretty immaculate photos of our house that we use when we list it for rental in the spring. Now...do I share the "rental" pics, or the pictures of what our home *actually* looks like on a daily basis? ;) You should do this post as a "tour of homes" carnival. :)

I'm glad you're enjoying being back in your home!

  4. Hi, I believe "de-lurking" is the correct blog terminology for what I'm doing. I had to comment that the well-loved stuffed animal on your master bed made my day. I hope thats where he lives, and not just where he got tossed today.

I very much enjoyed seeing your house and its many colors. I hate to say this but, I've been told that painting more neutral colors helps buyers to see themselves living in the house and therefore could help sell your house more quickly.

  5. Lauren ... tell me how to do a "Carnival" and I will. :)

Dana ... would love to take a peek into your home.

Sara ... glad to meet you. Thanks for stopping by.

Lizzeroo ... Oh yes, my 50 year old teddy bear has lived on my bed for many years. Yes, we have heard that neutral colors will help buyers to see themselves. We covered up the pretty blue and yellow hallways, and made them a boring white. We painted over our pretty blue exterior, and changed it to beige. While there are still colors left, you should have seen it before. :)

Thanks for stopping by for my Home Tour.

    :) :) :)

  6. I'm boring :)

I'm not much of a decor-person. I'm totally content with white walls (I don't even notice them). I've lived here for 4-1/2 years and my walls are the same shade of light pink they were when I first saw it 18 years ago. The window treatments are also the same. I have 4 things hanging on my walls, and 3 were here when I moved in (the other is my calendar).

I do love framed pictures, so I have those scattered about my room. Someday, when I have my own home, I will have framed photos hanging on my white walls. And bookshelves... lots and lots of bookshelves, filled with lots and lots of books :D

I love your house. It is so cozy and inviting. Everyone who enters feels at home. That is the way I have felt about each of your houses over the years (even the 2 you borrowed temporarily)... I'm excited for when you have a new house to decorate and make into the D Family Home. :)

  7. Thanks for sharing. I love looking at other people's homes. In fact, I'd love to have yours, it seems so spacious. We are trying to sell our home as well so that we can build on property that we have. We would like more space. Mainly kitchen space. Our kitchen will only comfortably hold one person cooking at a time which isn't good at all.

  9. Hi Kathy,

Welcome to my blog. So glad you delurked. :)

While our "style" is not fancy ... or expensive ... our focus is on comfort and hospitality. We LOVE having people come to spend a few hours, a day, or a week. We just LOVE having company, and having others know that they are always welcome to stop by.

We've always wanted our home to be a place that teens and young adults can have a "home away from home".

    :) :) :)

  10. I LOVE seeing pics of other peoples homes - especially my bloggy buddies :)! And can I just say that I think I need a "Mama's Coffee Shop" too - it looks amazing!!

  11. Hi Kate,

Before I got my own Mama's Coffee Shop, I was NOT addicted to mochas or lattes. I actually have never had a cup of plain coffee in my life ... and I don't like lattes. So, in actuality, I just like a fancy cup of hot chocolate with a little coffee thrown in (ie. a mocha).

Before I got my own Mama's Coffee Shop, I went by the local Coffee shop maybe once a week on average ... twice a week was a treat.

So, the Coffee Shop did not come from a coffee addiction. It actually came from a Hospitality Addiction. I LOVE to have people over. I LOVE to pamper my guests. So, no better way than my own Coffee Shop to invite guests to. One friend even brought over her own box of Soy Milk the other day, so that she will have it here when she stops by for a Coffee Date (she can't drink milk). So fun!

Yes ... Mama's Coffee Shop has been a serious TREAT ... and I am now officially addicted to mocha's. (2% milk, sugar free flavorings, and the perfect foam so that I don't need whip cream ... that helps my addiction to not become a weighty issue).

    :) :) :)

  12. I would love to know how you put together your blog photo header--I have been trying to do this for months?!

    Love from the North.

  13. Hello to My Friend from the North,

    Great question.

I use the easiest software imaginable, to create my fabulous collage photos. It's called COMIC LIFE. Just google it. I think it is $29 and downloadable (so you don't have to get it shipped to Uganda).

After creating the collage, you just save it as a jpg file and put it in whatever software you have for your photos. Then just "add a photo" to the top of your blog ... instant header.

I love making collages for Christmas Cards (you just print them off as 4x6 or 5x7 photos).

Last Christmas, I also made 8x10 copies of the Family Collage for all of my Big Kids, and for Grampa. They loved them!

Let me know if you get it, and have any questions. It's a GREAT program.

    Laurel :)

  14. How fun to see your home! It is so inviting and I love the colors- how fun! If you do end up doing a tour of homes, I would come out of my temporary blog retirement and take pics of ours. I have them from social work visits so it would be an easy one!! :-)
