Takin' Care of Mama

In addition to taking care of the Young Ones ...

In addition to spending time with the Big Kids ...

In addition to Lovin' on Papa ...
(when he is home 3 days/week)

Mama has been very focused on ...

Takin' Care of Mama.

This is an area that I haven't been very good at over the years.
Yes ... once a year or so I take a few days off by myself.
But, I really haven't done very well at taking care
of Mama on a daily basis.

The always urgent needs of the family,
have always taken precedent over
the long term needs of Mama.

When taking care of the daily food
needs of an extra large family ...
Mama hasn't had the time, energy
or grocery budget to eat how
Mama needs to eat.

With life so FULL of taking care of
the needs of my dozen children,
Mama hasn't been able to
leave the house to exercise.

With taking care of the spiritual needs
of an extra large family,
Mama has never taken time to
read through the Bible for
her own personal study.

(Obviously, I read the Bible, and do Bible
Studies, but have always wanted to
read straight through the Bible.)

So, what has Mama been up to?

Mama has been very focused on
reading food labels,
and eating what Mama needs to eat.

Mama quit eating breakfast 35 years ago,
but Mama is eating breakfast every morning now.

With Papa gone so much of the time,
and with some very challenging
behavior issues going on,
Mama can't get out of the house to exercise.

So, Mama bought a treadmill;
and Mama is walking at least 20 minutes per day,
at least 6 days per week.

In addition to doing Mama's weekly
Bible Study Fellowship lesson
(which is a very in-depth
study of Isaiah this year) ...

In addition to helping all of the Young Ones with
their weekly Bible Study Fellowship lessons ...

Mama is also Reading Thru The Bible in 90 days.
Yes ... 90 days.
Mama is planning to finish reading through
the Bible before Christmas.

Yes ...

Mama is getting serious ...

about ...

Takin' Care of Mama.

I started reading food labels,
and writing down everything that I eat,
on August 9th.

I started my daily walking program
on September 18th.

I started Reading Thru The Bible
on September 21st.

And ... I have consistently done
each and every one of these things,
on an almost daily basis.

I purposely didn't mention any of these goals
when I began my "Makin' A New Mama" plan,
because I didn't want to get all excited about it ...
and fail.

But, I am now very excited to say that the Lord
is helping me to be focused and consistent
in these most difficult areas for Mama.

It's not easy.

And it's not always fun.

But I KNOW that the Lord desires for me to be healthy ...
physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Please let me know what you are doing to

Take Care of Mama ...

or what you know you should be doing ...

or what your biggest area of struggle is ...

Let's encourage one another to be
ALL that the Lord desires us to be.

Now that I have taken too long to write this post,
my heart is pulled (as it is most days) between ...

should I go start our Homeschooling Day?

or

can I make time to exercise first?

Treadmill ... here I come.

  4. Go Mama Go!!!

If all goes according to "plan", can I join you in the eating/ exercise stuff? It'd be nice to do that together. :)

  5. I just started a yahoo group on Sept 20 reading the bible in 90 days. I'm doing P90X for the fitness. I'm following the suggested diet. I'm trying to keep my sanity.

  6. Oh, I so needed to read this today. It's so easy to take care of everyone else and when it's time to take care of me, I'm so tired all I want to do is drop into bed. But, you are inspiring me to do the same. I really want to start running, but don't seem to find the time. Maybe I can at least do it on my days off. I think I need to head off to buy me some running shoes! Thank you! Thank you!

  7. You know the 'ole saying, "if Mama ain't happy nobody is happy" so I am glad you are taking time out for Mama...and in the end you will have more energy for your dozen and have a much better outlook on your day. Way to go Mama, rah, rah, rah! So proud of you!

  8. You inspired me yesterday to get back on my treadmill and set my alarm to get up earlier this morning. However, baby girl threw a monkey wrench to my plans and kept me up all night as she has the croup. Will try again tomorrow morning! Also dusting off my bible. I usually justify my sporadic reading because I read to the children a children's bible. That is pretty lame and I need to seriously get back into the Word! I have been feeling spiritually stagnated, but maybe that is because I am not prioritizing studying the Bible.

Blessings and still looking forward to hearing about the budget for your road trip.

  9. I am doing the same thing. I started reading the bible daily (not going to finish in 90 days though-way to intense - but I am reading it through and learning lots) just started watching what I am eating again - that fell to peices when the boys came home. Now I need to start moving more. I am finding more strength than I thought I had just by doing these few things!!!
Thanks for being so inspiring. In so many ways!! You are a truly awesome example of a great Mama!!!

  10. Well done!

I have so needed to do those things too. Life gets so busy - and I don't even have kids!!!!

Managing the spiritual bit, but not the eating well and the exercise. Or getting to bed early. And it's taking its toll.

    I am in awe....

  11. Love it!
Mama can take better care of everyone when Mama takes good care of herself! :-)
It's a reminder that all Mamas need!

  13. Wow! I am sooo... glad that this post has been an encouragement to you. Yea!

Amanda ... It looks like we are focusing on some of the same goals. I'd love to hear more about your exercise and diet plans.

Yea, Mama Margie ... let me know when you buy those new running shoes. :)

Marlece ... oh how I need some cheerleaders. Thank you!

Waiting Arms ... so glad that I could encourage you in these areas. Let me know how things are going.

Frioriksson ... always good to hear from you. So glad that I inspired you. I kind of inspired myself, also, by writing it ... and walked 30 minutes today instead of 20. :)

Living Creatively ... glad I could get your ball rolling.

    Be BLESSED!

    Laurel :)

  14. Whew! Because MY life looks so much like yours I haven't posted to you in a longtime!! I read, I "lurk" I guess, but that LIFE-thing keeps me from posting comments in a lot of places where I'm reading. GOOD FOR YOU!!!! I have a treadmill, but I am usually so busy running past it, that I seldom get ON it. You will be amazed at how eating breeakfast of any kind jump starts your energy and metabolism for the rest of your day. It did me. I am a coofee only kind of girl but witht he help of some food that I could palate early in the morning, I am a breakfast eater now too. We DO need to take care of the Mamas, that is for sure, and my kiddos appreciate it when thye see that I am am taking care of me. Its creepy how when your birth certificate gets to a certain age, the parts associated with it start to be less efficient! Even as busy as I am, "somehow" overthe last two years, a number of pounds crept onboard my midsection but didn't leave wehn I issued the command. Knowing that 5 would soon multiply to 10 (they did) when that extra 10 were firmly planted I got serious about Taking Care of Mamma too. I am sure that bringing Daniel home from Liberia and now having a baby to care for has helped , but happily, I can report the uninvited guests have departed!!! Now to keep them vanquished.
We have a Bible -in-a-Year that we read together as part of our school day and we love doing that together. W've been reading through for a year and a half...we just keep going . Its been so good for everyone, and even if we double up or triple up after a crazy week, its part of our life and we love it!!
KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB of caring for my friend Laurel!!
YEs Houston is a bit far for a gget together, but I hope you have a GREAT TIME at your wedding. Esther's is now lessthan one month. INCREDIBLE!
And HALLELUJAH YES, feeding Daniel is such a joy of a job now that he has his feeding tube! I am seeingthat he has more alert time now that he isn't needing so much energy to BE fed. Life is full, life is busy, life is hard, but OH LIFE IS SO GOOD when you know that life is being about walking with the Lord !!
And for the public record, it was SO FUN to have your family visiting with us again last month!
    Love
    Linda

  16. Hi Laurel,
Great post...I've been pondering on it for the last few weeks. with daddy gone so much, I am not taking such good care of myself, ugh.
I am praying upon a new journey, braving the candid-ness of it, and asking your permission to use your title "Takin' care of mama"?
~Thanks for keeping real my friend,
    Sheri
btw...thinking about how/when to head your way =)
