Hot Topic

Okay Readers . . .

we've got quite a little discussion going in the comments section of my "Highly Distracted" post about the elections.

One reader said . . .

"I believe we, as Christians will see many of our freedoms removed.  This too will have lessons in it for me.  We have been blessed in America, we don't want to see our freedoms curtailed."

Another reader asked . . .

"Can you comment on the freedoms you think will be taken away with another term for President Obama?

I think we all are so blessed to live in a country where everyone has a say and that we can openly discuss our differences without fear of punishment for our opinions but I do think we need to be informed.  . . .  do you think that President Obama is NOT a Christian?  I never quite understand what people mean when they say that President Obama is not "God's best choice."  He may have views that disagree with yours but I don't think that his religion is really much of an issue."

Readers . . .

. . .  what do YOU think?

. . .  what freedoms are you worried will get taken away with Obama in office?

. . .  what are your biggest concerns about Obama being re-elected?

. . .  what were your biggest concerns about Romney possibly becoming President?

. . .  should the religious preference of a President be an issue?
(I realize that a lot of Christians did not vote for Romney because he is a Mormon.)

I really believe that we can learn from one another.

(I'm actually looking forward to my next coffee date with a friend,
where she is going to "school me" on why it is good that
Washington State legalized Marijuana for Recreational Use.
I don't think she'll convince me . . . but I am interested to hear her reasoning.)

I think that we can share, graciously, our differences of opinion.

I believe it is good for us to be able to verbalize our thoughts on tough issues.

But . . . let's all remember to "Play Nice".

  1. Obama has a very narrow view of the first amendment when it comes to freedom of religion. He views it as the right to worship how you choose, but does not recognize the right to apply those principles in every aspect of your life. His health care law is a prime example of that by forcing religious institutions to pay for contraception and abortions that go against their principles. Not to mention the incredible taxes that it imposes on the middle class.

Obama does not respect the separation of powers, and has bypassed Congress by issuing executive orders that are contrary to law. His Justice Department has refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, which is the law of the land, until that is changed by Congress. He refuses to enforce immigration law, and sues states to attempt to do so.

Obama rules using the same tactics he did as a community organizer. For all his lofty talk at both victory speeches about working together, he demonizes his opponents and takes a my way or the highway approach.

His view on abortion are way beyond what even most prochoice people accept. He proposed a law multiple times in the Illinois State Senate that would allow a doctor to kill a baby that survived a botched abortion.

Government programs have their place in situations of true need, but he seeks to expand dependence on government to buy votes. Dependence is addictive, and actually destroys self esteem. Instead of being a way to care for the disabled and a temporary hand up to those going through a difficult time, it has become a way of life for many. No one is lifted out of poverty this way. I believe we should all be engaged in service to others and caring for the poor and needy. The government is the least efficient and most fraud-prone way to accomplish anything. As Thomas Jefferson said, "A government big enough to supply you with everything you need is a government big enough to take away everything you have...the course of history shows that as the government grows, liberty decreases."

  2. A "True/False" Election test. I'd like for all of us to take it.
a friend sent this this morning--I thought it fit in well with all discussion--God is still on the throne!

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, Jesus will still be King.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, our responsibilities as Christians will not have changed one iota.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, the greatest agent for social change in America will still be winning the hearts and minds of men and women through the gospel, not legislation.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, my primary citizenship will still be in this order - (1) the Kingdom of God , (2) America , not vice-versa.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, the tomb will still be empty.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, the cross, not the government, will still be where salvation is found.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, our children will still be more concerned with whether or not we spend time with them than with who is President.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, my neighbor will still be my neighbor, and loving him/her will still be the second greatest commandment. (Do you know the first?)

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, the only way to see abortion ultimately overturned will still be winning men and women to a high view of life through the gospel of Christ.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, the only way to see gay marriage ultimately defeated will still be winning men and women to a biblical view of marriage through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, my retirement will still not match my treasure in Heaven.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, "Jesus Is Lord" will still be the greatest truth in the Universe.

True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who has won, we will still know that God is in control.

Just remember who you are and who He is.

  4. As Christians, we are called to help meet the needs of those less fortunate. Having access to affordable healthcare is one of people's most basic needs. That is what the Patient Protection and Affordable Care At (the real name of "Obamacare") is all about.

And I'm not saying that I agree with gay marriage, but here is an interesting article on marriage in the Bible:

  5. One of the things that really, really frightened me about Mitt Romney was that he was so incredibly unclear an inconsistent on a few issues that are incredibly important such as women's access to birth control, equalization of pay and Medicare. The tea-party and their ilk are killing the Republican party but people like Romney seem completely unable to distance themselves because of finances and to keep what they believe is an important demographic, I suppose... I have been stunned and disgusted that issues as basic as rape and birth control are up for debate in 2012. To be honest, I am surprised that any women are comfortable voting for him when he clearly did not distance himself from some of the ludicrous things Republican "leaders" were saying during the campaign.

  7. By "access to birth control," I suppose Stephanie is referring to mandating it be covered by insurance plans, even those run by Catholic institutions, for whom it is against their religion. I can't imagine that anyone believes that any person could not get contraceptives if they want to. The pill costs something like $9, and you can get free contraceptives at places like Planned Parenthood or other clinics. Mitt Romney never said anything about limiting access to contraceptives, and he and most other Republican leaders distanced themselves forcefully from the moronic statements of Akin and Mourdock. Even most people who believe in abortion would object to taxpayer dollars being used to fund it. That is exactly what happens at Planned Parenthood. FYI--Planned Parenthood DOES NOT provide mammograms. People who support them as an organization should be free to donate their money to support them, but people's hard earned tax money should not go to abortion providers.

  8. I agree with Stephanie's comments.

And here's a most interesting fact that I just read:

The Greek word in the Bible that we now read as “homosexualilty” is “Arsenokoitai“. But this word did not refer to same sex relationships of any kind. In fact, the word referred to promiscuity, of any kind. As well, in the New Testament, as Paul was writing about sexual relationships, he did not use the word “paiderasste”, which actually does translate to homosexuality.

After thinking over the issue of gay marriage, I really think the government should just issue "civil union" and not marriage licenses. The definition of marriage varies from faith to faith anyway and should be left up to each couple's own faith and beliefs.
